newman42 questions:
Computers as entertainment devices
It seems that with the launch of the latest gaming consoles that the separation between computers for entertainment purposes versus those used for business applications is slowly widening. Is this a trend that would make things easier?
View A
Gaming computers require much more resources than those used for business applications. It makes sense to keep these systems separate. Keep the gaming computer in the living room, the business computer in the office.
View B
Computers are made to be multitasking machines that can accomplish a variety of functions. As technology progresses, the need to upgrade will always exist, therefore it only makes sense to integrate entertainment and business applications into one machine.

newman42 thinks: I like the idea of keeping things separate. Gaming consoles tend to upgrade every four or five years while computers used for things such as email and web browsing could potentially last a lot longer without needing upgrading. This could at least slow down obsolescence to some extent without detracting from the experience. Microsoft's Xbox 360 is a great example of keeping these systems separate while still coexisting and sharing resources.
Richinteraction thinks: PCs will soon merge with other digital devices to the point where we will have 1 entertainment "hub" in our homes which will provide everything from IPTV to games, search and online banking. Why have more than 1 device when you don't need it? Simplicity is about reducing the need for separate devices
abum96 thinks: Convergence is inevitable. Just look at the new iphone. When given the choice, consumers would rather have everything in one I would think.
