JBonnin thinks: If we don't consider the pleasure sunlight offers, we should remember straight away that sunlight produces vitamin D.

The deficiency in vitamin D causes bones and teeth diseases.

But even more important, recent studies suggest that exposure to sunlight may reduce the risks of certain cancers such as breast, colon and prostate.


Personalizing for your mood
JBonnin thinks: So often a deppressive environement can be changed by a smartly placed side lamp... I have also seen some new restaurants fail in spite of a great cuisine- due to an unpleasant lighning only!

Sparking creativity in children
JBonnin thinks: Of course we need to use all the technology's benefits...

However­, I do believe raising a child must follow the same principles always: love giving and a lot of socialization, which no technology can supply.

For those who will not consider socialization a key factor in raising children, I'd like to suggest a glance at 'Independent Rational Animals', by Professor Alasdair MacIntyre.


Becoming your own personal trainer
JBonnin thinks: We seem to have lost the understanding that the base to all accomplishments is conquered daily, by keeping a healthy and balanced life.

Therefore, instead of following the sensible way, which is to keep healthy, we make our own diseases and then hire personal trainers and doctors to help us.

One failure of modern education is actually not to consider the individual as a whole. That's why so many western people end by turning to oriental practices and philosophies.


Relaxation, the cure to a hard days work
JBonnin thinks: Of course it is necessary to retrieve physical and emotional balance which is not allowed during the accomplishment of duties.

This will change according to each individual as to each moment in life. When I'm attached to projects which demand too much, all I'll want is a good night sleep.

In the past, fixing my house could be a great stress relief, as the place I live in needed a lot to be done and it was very satisfying to make it cosier. Gardening is one of the ways I relax nowadays, since the structural problems of my home were fixed.

Someone whose job demands too much patience may feel the need of practicing a martial art in order to bring an emotional balance to aggressivity, for instance.

We must keep the drill to make our lives fuller and balanced and not allow ourselves to accomodate to routine. Be it relaxation, a hobby, physical activity, it's up to each one to find what recovers mind and body and makes life fuller.

Andrewww thinks: I must admit I'm a sucker for sunlight. Europe is starting to warm up and the positive effect clear.

- I'm waking up earlier and clearer in the morning.

There are a lot more people out and about and the atmosphere seems much more friendly

- Lunchtimes I make an effort to go for a short walk to enjoy the weather

- I also love the fact that it's still light out when I get home. It seems that there's much more time to enjoy my evening and this gives me a much better feeling about my work/private time balance

I'm not clear on the fact if this positive effect is physical and/or mental.

My positive frame of mind urges me to undertake more physical activities, which makes me feel better about well being in return.

So yes, (sun) light certainly effects my overall well being. Has there been any testing by Philips if these effect can be triggered by man-made light?

Andrewww thinks: I find the relaxation often isn't the best remedy. To achieve true well being there are other "secret ingredients".... Social interaction, Creative distraction and physical effort.

It is often said that a healthy diet and sports help balance out a stressed job.

What I do is make sure that I prepare tasty a slowfood meal at least 5 days a week. My girlfriend and I always eat together which is a great moment to catch up and reflect on the day.

Sports where never for me, I find it a waste of time to spend an hour running after a ball or idly stare at myself while pumping weights.... pfewwww.

Next to my creatively and intellectually challenging job I tend to do a lot of heavy D.I.Y. manual labor in my spare time. The thing I love about working on my house or outside is that you actually get stuff done. At the end of the effort there's a concrete result which give me a sense of achievement.

simpleton thinks: maybe stress is part of our modern world. maybe it does drive us to do some things. but is that the way it *should* be? stress can only be tolerated for so long by the mind and body before they both give up. rest and relaxation is essential if we are to continue to strive for a more simplistic life.

Jetlag Relief
ilovesimplicity thinks: I think you can make your own (travel) life a lot easier if you drink plenty of water, eat healthy and take some rest. Also a good moisturizer for your face will make you feel a bit better.

Why do we carry so many keys?
peon thinks: The reason we still use keys/mechanical locks is because they are CHEAP. Biometric locks costs 5x more than "regular" locks. As for security, I do not believe the mechanical locks are as safe as we are led to believe.

Of course, while biometric/electronic locks provide better security and more convenience, it relies (like JBonnin pointed out) on electricity.... So either you'd keep having to replace the batteries on the unit or good luck to you when the electricity is out.

ssp thinks: I can't stand house plants even though I love nature/plants. Plants should be where they belong: outside.

Let's use English only
simpleton thinks: we want to make life more simple right? let's all communicate in one language then. Chinese, Arabic, Esperanto - heck that's what it was created for (albeit for Europeans and not for "others") - English, Spanish, whatever...diversity, individuality, culture, all these complex things are not what we want are they?? ;)

priceaam thinks: Lets go to metric, at least get everyone on the same system. While we are at it if everyone spoke one langugage it would make things a whole lot easier.

BigA thinks: Yes, let's get going. I vote for the metric system this is most modern, logical and easy to handle by computers. So, what do we do? Send a letter to George Bush? (just kidding but it will be difficult to agree on as the costs for the countries that would have to change are immense, just think of something like Y2K.)

Sizes for clothes
dreve thinks: I think is a question why realise is 'realize' in US, of coz, different can decide on different types of size because people's build are differently. For example, there's no such thing as size 6 (UK) equlivent in US, that's far too small for their people, and the same 'cuttings' is a medium size in Japanese because of different body build

KEEP the different sizing!
